Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar today asked the Centre not to notify the Cauvery Tribunal award without consulting all the river basin states. In his speech at the National Development Council meeting, Shettar noted that Karnataka and other states have challenged the final award in the Supreme Court and the matter is still pending. “I request the central government that before notification of the award, all basin states need to be consulted,” he said. Shettar said he had already written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in this regard. In a letter to Singh, Shettar had said the Centre should not take a “unilateral decision” to notify the final award of the Cauvery River Water Disputes Tribunal. The Tribunal, which adjudicated the Cauvery water-sharing dispute, pronounced the award on February 5, 2007, allocating water share to all the four riparian states-- Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry. Since an appeal is pending before the Supreme Court and also the application filed before the Tribunal under Section 5 (3) Inter-State Water Disputes Act, Karnataka has already expressed its reservations against notification of the final award as well as constitution of the Cauvery Monitoring Board.
