Heavy rains are wreaking havoc in north Telangana districts with standing crops getting damaged resulting in huge losses to the farmers. The initial crop losses were estimated at around Rs 50 crore in Warangal and the crops in an estimated area of 40,000 acre have got damaged. In almost all the mandals, there were heavy rains and the district received a rainfall of 12.5 mm on Sunday. The Lingala Ghanpur and Maddur mandals have received the highest rainfall of 42.04 mm. The maize and chilli are the main crops that have got totally damaged in the district, where there was a constant rain throughout Sunday. It was estimated that the chilli crop in more than 500 hectares was completely damaged in the district and the initial estimates indicated that the maize farmers too incurred huge losses as it was the harvesting time. The district authorities asked the revenue divisional officers to submit a detailed report at the crop loss in their respective divisions. The mango crop in Jangaon and Mahabubabad divisions have also got damaged. As there was incessant rain throughout Sunday, the preparation of loss estimates got delayed. If the rains continued for one more day or two, the officials fear, all the standing crops would go waste. Many houses in areas like Sammaiah Nagar, Vidyanagar, Gandhi Nagar, Moturi Nagar, B R Bhagwandas Nagar and Balasamudram have got damaged. The commuters had tough time on the roads negotiating overflowing water and the potholes filled with water. In Kairmnagar district, heavy rains devastated standing crops and mango orchards in Mahadevpur, Kataram, Maha Muttaram, Sircilla and other mandals in the district on Sunday. The district received 625.3 MM of rainfall.
