A recent report of the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) that bottled drinking water show presence of residues of harmful pesticides. The CSE has held that 8 brands of the mineral water sold in bottles and making fast buck are not safe for drinking. Taking serious note of the report, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs has withdrawn ISI certification of these beverages. The licence of these products might even be cancelled by the Ministry. In the wake of these disturbing reports, the department of ecology and environmental science of Assam University, Silchar, has come out with the novel and accessible Swiss method of disinfecting water with solar energy (SODIS).
