Ever wondered what happens to all the waste you generate and where it goes after it is mindlessly dumped? Reports indicate that a good 99 per cent of people have never bothered or even know what happens thereafter. The responsibility of collection of waste obviously has to rest with the municipal board of the city.
The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), however, is one such agency that has been quietly working to salvage the situation and improve the lot, with their never-say-die spirit, things have not got as bad as they would have. MPCB aims at sustainable development by addressing public needs. It has already put plans into action for control of pollution in Pune, Solapur, Chandrapur, Kolhapur; brought about environmental improvement at religious places (example, pre-feasibility reports for Alandi and Shirdi); undertaken demonstration projects for municipal solid waste treatment and disposal facilities in five cities of Maharashtra, while the assessment of e-waste generation in Mumbai and Pune region has been successfully completed, as has coastal water monitoring with the help of NIO.
