DS reels out aid to farmers

The Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president, Mr D. Srinivas, exuded confidence that the people would repose their faith in the Congress and bring the pro-farmer YSR government again to power in the next elections to continue the development endeavour. The PCC chief participated in a farmers' rally held in connection with the waiver of the loans of the farmers here on Monday. Later, addressing a farmers' convention, he said that the government led by the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, fortified the agriculture and allied sectors, which are the backbones of the rural economy by following the footsteps of legendary leaders like late Jawahar Lal Nehru and Indira Gandhi. "In a historical decision, the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, provided a major relief to the farmers by announcing waiver of loans to the tune of Rs 72,000 crore in the country. Of this, 84 lakh farmers of our state got relief to an extent of Rs 13,000 crores. In a similar gesture, the Chief minister had announced Rs 5,000 relief to each farmer those who have already paid their loans," he said. Referring to the record paddy production achieved by the farmers of the district, Mr Srinivas said that the district is poised to achieve the top position in the entire gamut of agriculture after the completion of the ongoing irrigation projects. The APSRTC chairman, Mr M. Satyanarayana Rao, lauded the Chief Minister for initiating major irrigation projects under Jalayagnam and giving a fillip to agriculture production. Earlier, an impressive rally comprising bullock carts was held under the aegis of the district Congress Committee president, Mr T. Santosh Kumar. A large number of farmers took part. Ministers J. Ratnakar Rao and T. Jeevan Reddy, Peddapalli MP G. Venkata Swamy, government whip D. Sridhar Babu, Metpalli MLA K. Ramlu, Andhra Pradesh Markfed chairman Ponnam Prabhakar and others participated.
