SHILLONG: Deputy Chief Minister Hoping Stone Lyngdoh has stuck to his guns on the uranium issue, saying he was even opposed to the idea of setting up the All-Party Committee on Uranium Mining by the MPA Government. Mr Lyngdoh on Monday said he still held the view that "no expert in the world is able to help protect people from radiation of uranium." "There is no proof to show that uranium mining does not harm living things, especially humans. I would not bow down to any pressure on this issue," he said, adding, "Many people have been affected by radiation from uranium mining and some of them have died in West Khasi Hills." Mr Lyngdoh has been at the forefront of the movement against uranium mining in the State since 1955. Even Union Minister Jairam Ramesh, during his recent visit to the State, had failed to convince the Deputy Chief Minister of the measures the Central Government proposed to take to ensure safety of local people in the areas in and around the proposed site of uranium mining in West Khasi Hills. It may be mentioned here that the All-Party Committee on Uranium Mining recently recommended formation of three independent expert groups to study possible health hazards from uranium mining before a final decision by the Government on the matter.
