Mumbai, June 29 With the city topping the list in generating the highest amount of electronic waste in the country, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) along with the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) will soon be searching for a landfill site exclusive to treat and dump e-waste as a pilot project. The officials of the MMRDA, the MPCB and experts on waste management will be meeting in the next week to discuss the matter following which the search for the site will be initiated, informed M R Shah, principal advisor of the project and former Chief Engineer of the civic body's Solid Waste Management department. Shah, who has proposed a site solely for e-waste said, "Since e-waste management doesn't come directly under the purview of the municipal corporations, nobody is coming forward to address the issue. Therefore, it has been proposed to the MMRDA that a site for treating e-waste from the entire Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) should be finalised,' Shah said. He further said that the common site would be in or near Mumbai city limits. "There could be even two sites in the project, but locating a site is not a difficult task. Modalities should be decided upon and implemented soon,' he stressed. Shah has also proposed a site for construction and demolition wastes generated through projects implemented by the MMRDA. "The biggest generator of the construction and demolition waste is the MMRDA as several infrastructure projects are under it. Since there is no separate site for dumping such wastes, the existing landfill sites are overburdened by the sheer volume of these wastes generated now-a-days,' he said and added that the site for this was being proposed within the municipal limits of Mumbai. Meanwhile, a team of experts working on the Common Regional Landfill Site (CRLS) along with Shah has short listed three sites after physical verification of 15 such sites in the MMR. "Sites near Bhiwandi, Airoli and Ulhasnagar have been short listed after these sites were found suitable in accordance with the required parameters,' Shah said. The team would conduct a techno-feasible study on the three sites, he said. Under this project, municipal bodies located at a convenient geographical location would transport the remnants to the landfill site. The MMRDA is looking for "operators'- either Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) consortium or franchise-to manage these sites.
