The Eastern Assam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (EACCI) has said that the ban of plastics by the district administration goes against the government policy. The body mentioned this while objecting to the prohibitory order on the manufacture, sale and use of plastic carry bags within the district. While recognizing the menace caused by the disposal of these bags, it laid the blame on the inefficiency of the municipality and lack of civic sense among the people. The recent objection has been raised at a time when the public have appreciated the move made by the district administration. The EACCI commented traders dealing in plastic items were doing so because of public demand and that they could not be held responsible for the plastic waste generation. It stated that the ban was not the solution to the problem of garbage disposal in the district. In justification of their stand, the body said that the government was keen on raising the per capita plastic consumption in India from 1.2 kg per person to 5 kg per person. It further said that the Brahmaputra Gas Cracker and Polymer Project would lead to the rise in the use of plastic. Meanwhile, some dealers and sellers of plastic and disposable items alleged that they were being harassed by some office bearers of Dibrugarh Municipal Board in the name of the ban. The EACCI asked the district administration to look into the matter.
