Earth-cutting activity threatens existence of Deepor Beel

The very existence of Deepor Beel is under threat as some anti-social groups are busy encroaching its areas and illegally cutting the soil of the wetland. The efforts of the government and other nature-loving organisations for eco-tourism development of the Beel, situated on the western side of Guwahati, have failed as illegal cutting of soil continues unabated since the last four months on the Ramsar site by these anti-social groups who identify themselves as educated unemployed youths. These so-called unemployed youths collect permission from the Forest Department every year in the autumn season and start cutting soil on the wetland famous for floura and fauna. It has been observed that these youths are cutting the soil of the Beel and supplying it to some commercial sites and other households in the surrounding areas. They supply the soil with over 50 trucks regularly at higher rates
