KOLLAM: ISRO chairman G. Madhavan Nair has said that the country will be able to develop its own earth observation satellite within two years. Interacting with the students of TKM Engineering College as part of the Conjura 09, technical symposium on national security, Madhavan Nair said that with the development of earth observation satellite, the country would be able to advance in many strategically important areas, including the defence. He also stressed the need for conducting studies and research work on making use of helium element in the sun for our energy projects. One tonne of helium will be sufficient to meet our energy needs for a year. The ISRO will also concentrate on developing Re-usable Launch vehicles as they would considerably reduce the cost for space exploration. With the use of such vehicles, the cost of launching one kilo of a satellite will come down to 3,000 dollars from 15,000 dollars, he said. Our mission to Mars will become possible in 2013 and our manned mission to the moon will be realised in 2015. By 2020, the country will be able to produce its own civilian aircraft.
He said that the Government should pay more attention in producing its own aircraft, including light combat aircraft, as the country is lagging behind in the field. While delivering an address at the seminar, Madhavan Nair said that the next world war would be fought among the nations not for territorial boundaries or ethnic domination, but for natural resources including water, oil and other energy sources. The countries will vie with each other in exploiting solar energy and those countries near the equator will be benefited by such explorations.
