The National Environment Board yesterday rejected an Agriculture Ministry proposal to relax its resolution to ban shrimp farming in the freshwater zone. The board insisted on keeping the ban on the grounds the activity degraded soil quality and promoted "slash-and-burn cultivation"in which farmers move to new ground after their farms become infertile.
