There is greater awareness towards environmental protection among iron ore mines in the State, according to the Mines Environment and Mineral Conservation Council.The council encompasses areas consisting of Goa, parts of Karnataka and Maharashtra having a total of 108 mines, comprising 12 large mechanised mines, excavating and handling more than 1.5 million tonnes of iron ore per year.
