Eco-friendly bags

By Hemanthi Guruge The Ministry of Environment and Central Environmental Authority together with a private company has launched an environment friendly bag. Environment Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka noted Sri Lanka has faced serious problems due to the use of polythene. The use of polythene was a strong challenge for man, Chairman of the Central Environmental Authority Udaya Gammanpila said. The Colombo town was flooded by polythene, he said. At the recently concluded Provincial Council elections the government banned the use of polythene under 20 microns. The Central Environmental Authority had said the use of such polythene was an offence. The CEA had also urged the candidates to refrain from using fire crackers to prevent noise pollution.
