Farmers of Gwalior-Chambal region, who were facing drought-like conditions for the last four year, this year are a happy lot as the rains have come in abundance. Due to heavy rains in Bhind district, rivers including Chambal, Bainsli and Kwari are in spate. The farmers here are happy as they would be able to do agriculture in a better way. They are preparing to sow kharif crops. However, the farmers who had completed sowing during light rains are a little worried. The heavy rains in Bhind district have claimed four lives and it is essential to provide relief to the kin of those killed. In this context, the move of the Datia district administration needs to be appreciated as it provided immediate help to the kin of five people who died while grazing their cattle. The people who meet calamities expect immediate help from the govt-administration. People living in around 200 villages in Bhind district are being alerted as there is fear of floods in the region's rivers. In Bhind and Gwalior, the people are facing problems due to water entering low lying areas and inside homes. Despite of this type of problems being faced every rainy season, no concrete measures are being taken by the government departments. In many colonies there are no storm water drains. Water collects whereever it finds place leading to difficulties for the people. There are some problems which can be taken up by the district administration only. The role of the people is much limited. In Jabalpur division too there are reports of good rains and one gate of the Bargi dam had to be opened. The low-lying areas from Jabalpur to Hoshangabad have been alerted but mere alerting is not enough. There is need to prepare relief teams to meet any crisis. At the same time other districts of the State too should make necessary preparations to tackle problems arising due to heavy rains.
