Major damage to large areas of rain forests in the southernmost province of Hainan threatens to affect the bio-diversity and ecological balance of the green island. Long regarded as China's largest botanical garden, the island is known as a haven for various species of plants and animals. Hainan boasts more than 4,900 types of tropical and sub-tropical plants, including 150 rare plants under State protection.
