Efforts on to solve Lalur garbage issue

The Cabinet on Wednesday asked the Public Works Department (PWD) to prepare a detailed project report for disposing solid waste from Thrissur as part of construction of bunds for the Kole fields in the district. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told the media after the Cabinet meeting that this would be a solution to the issues over the waste treatment plant at Lalur near Thrissur. He hoped that social activist K. Venu, who was on a hunger strike over the issue, would end his strike in view of the Cabinet decision. The Chief Minister said that waste would be used as filler for the bunds after separation. That would then be covered with earth. The PWD had been asked to take up the work under the Kole Development Programme. Solatium Mr. Chandy announced that the families of four persons who died in road accident between Erattupetta and Vagamon would be given Rs.3 lakh each. Of the injured, three persons in serious condition would be given Rs.25,000 each and the others would be given Rs.10,000 each. The Public Works Department would be asked to set up sign boars and build crash barriers at the accident location to prevent accidents in future. The Chief Minister said that the government was determined to provide security to women passengers. The Railways had been requested to provide 218 passes for posting of women constables on the trains. Though the Railways had promised to cooperate with the government's efforts, the passes were yet to be received. If the passes were not forthcoming, the government would take season tickets for the constables. The Railway Police, he added, was organising a women's wing in the force. Action promised Replying to a question, Mr. Chandy said that if the aggrieved woman commuter complained to him about alleged harassment by travelling ticket examiners as reported, he would take up the matter with the authorities concerned after hearing her.
