EGS funds for watershed development programme

Maharashtra's Employment Guarantee Scheme (EGS) has Rs 5,516 crores unspent from its corpus and another Rs 3,144 crores owed to it by the state government . Now, plans are being drawn up to use it gradually to "drought proof" th state by taking up long term watershed development programmes. Digging percolation tanks and building fair weather roads using unskilled workers in periods of drought through the EGS msy continue "But it would not stop in Mumbai. Funds would be given for improving watersheds on a continuing basis right through the year and for the long term."
