Banking heavily on the implementation of the interceptor sewer-system along three major drains to "clean' Yamuna, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Monday asked Engineers India Limited (EIL), which is engaged in laying the interceptor lines, to complete work by 2010 end. Chairing the review meeting on progress of the Yamuna cleaning project, the chief minister also took stock of steps taken by other agencies to achieve the "clean river' plan. According to Delhi Jal Board (DJB) chief executive officer (CEO) Arun Mathur, the EIL submitted before the review meeting that they are preparing the detailed project report (DPR) and it would be ready by this October. Officials said that EIL also submitted that they would lay the interceptor sewer-system in Najafgarh and supplementary drains by October 2010 and the work of laying the system in Shahadra drain would be completed by the end of 2012. EIL officials also reportedly said that they were identifying the availability of international contractors of repute to implement the project. "However, the chief minister told them to give the work to more contractors so that the entire task is completed on all three major drains by the end of 2010. She also said that the EIL could take a couple of months more to finish the task. At no cost should it be extended to 2012,' Mathur added. As per the plan, these interceptor sewer systems would intercept sewage flowing into the three major drains from small drains and convey the same to the nearest sewage treatment plant, thereby ensuring that only treated sewage is discharged into the Yamuna. Claiming the completion of this project would be a "selfless contribution' from the Delhi Government, Mathur said, "We will be improving the quality of water since the system will ensure that only treated water flows to the river. Delhi draws its water from Yamuna up to Waziarabad barrage and drain water flows to the river between Wazirabad and Okhla. So, cleaning the water would be a service to our neighbours in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.'
