CONGRESS MP Eknath Gaik-wad, whose constituency includes Asia's largest slum, Dharavi, has assured that the redevelopment model of the sprawling slum will be replicated in other slums of the constituency. After delimitation, his Mumbai South-Central constituency includes slum-dominated parts of Mankhurd, Trombay, Sion and Kurla.
"People already have high expectations from me and expect the Dharavi model to be replicated. The slums of Cheetah camp, Sindhi camp and other slum pockets will be redeveloped on the lines of Dharavi," said Gaikwad who launched his poll campaign on Friday near Maheswari udyan in Matunga.
Gaikwad said he is seeking votes on the plank of achievements of the UPA government and the funds for infrastructure given to Mumbai under the JNNURM.
"If I win, people would obviously want a Dharavi-like model in their slums, since problems faced by slum dwellers are the same everywhere. We want them to live a quality life and it will be possible only when you have a good house. Improving standard and quality of life is our main aim," he said.
Although Dharavi has a history of not repeating the sitting MP a second term, barring Sharad Dighe of the Shiv Sena, Gaikwad said he was confident of victory.
"People used to say the same thing for MLAs, that Dharavi residents do not give a second chance to them. But I became MLA from the constituency for three terms. I am sure to win the second term as I have the confidence of Dharavi residents," said Gaikwad who is contesting against Shiv Sena's Mahim MLA Suresh Gambhir.
Gaikwad, who had won the 2004 polls against Shiv Sena's Manohar Joshi, said he has started campaigning with the help of his daughter and sitting MLA Varsha. "Moreover, of the seven MLAs in the assembly segments of the constituency, five belong to the Congress and two to the Sena. So our party has a greater strength," he said. He will begin rallies in his constituency on April 14.
