The number of water mains breaking in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane has increased by 50% over the past year because of El Nino, the Australian water industry said. The weather phenomenon, which has seen lower rainfall over eastern Australia this summer, also tends to dry out and and move the earth, breaking water mains.
