An elephant fossil beleived to be atleast 50,000 years old has been discovered near the saffron fields of Kashmir at Galandhar (Pampore), 15 km east of Srinagar. The discovery is considered by experts to be very significant, given the high altitude of Kashmir. It brings the Valley closer to the vertebrate fossil-rich Shivalik hills in terms of ancient wildlife and climate and could throw new light on the past wildlife and climatic changes in the Valley.
