It is the massacre of the ridge and that too at the hands of the forest Department. At least 68 neem and kikar trees in the vicinity of Sohan Burj in Mehrauli are to be axed as per the Department's orders and the land be sold for residential plots. And though the realtor is not being named, Forest Department officials admit that land on the ridge, spread over 72 bighas, has been handed over to a builder. Sources also said the realtor had entered into an understanding with the encroachers who live in jhuggis in the vicinity and the Forest Officers have readily given him clearance. A sign of definite construction in the times to come, the area is dotted with truckloads of bricks and broken boulders that have been a signature of the natural geography.
