Encroachment in Assam forests

The land area of 13 reserve forests in Sonitpur district of Assam has been reduced by two-thirds due to largescale encroachment and unabated felling of trees in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, leading to man-elephant conflict. Forest officials in Tezpur said the area of the reserve forests in Sonitpur has reduced form 96,374 hectare to 34,613 hectares.
