Rising incidents of encroachment in the reserve forests of Jonai subdivision under Dhemaji Forest Division (T) have threatened the existence of forest land in the district in Assam. Conscious sections of people here feel that immediate attention of the Forest Department is the need of the hour to check encroachment. It is alleged that out of the total forest area of 43,748.96 hectares, nearly 30,000 hectares had already been encroached upon by people and transformed into human habitat. Due to rapid deforestation during the last decade, wildlife in the area is also on the verge of extinction.
