No minister to be allowed to step into district if apathy continues: T.V. Rajesh Accusing Chief Minister Oommen Chandy of shying away from disbursing rightful assistance to endosulfan victims, the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) has warned that it will not allow any ministers to step into the district if the UDF government continued to show lethargy in taking care of the hapless victims. The Central and State governments could not afford to wash their hands of the serious health hazards wrecked by the overuse of pesticide in the PCK land, DYFI State unit secretary T.V. Rajesh, MLA, said here on Friday. Mr. Rajesh was inaugurating a function as part of a Collectorate march taken out by the organisation here demanding a special tribunal for rehabilitating the victims and their families and swift disbursal of compensation as recommended by the National Human Rights Commission. Package sought The leader urged the government to bring out a “comprehensive Kasaragod package” aimed at taking care of the distraught families of the victims in the remote hamlets of the district. With the indefinite hunger strike launched by the Endosulfan Peedhitha Janakeeya Munnani (EPJM) entering the 25th day on Friday, it was quite resenting to note that none of the members of the UDF Cabinet ever bothered to visit the fasting agitators, he said. The DYFI would not allow any ministers to step into the district if the government failed to initiate swift measures to mitigate the plight of the pesticide victims, who were driven to lead a life of perpetual misery for no fault of theirs, the youth leader said. Mr. Rajesh accused the government of adopting a stance supporting the influential pesticide companies. He criticised the Government Chief Whip P.C. George for making derogatory remarks in public places against leading political leaders in the State. His (Mr. Gerorge’s) outbursts indicated the inefficient leadership of Mr. Chandy, the MLA said.
