Endosulfan: talks with Chandy today

Formal discussion on Monday As the indefinite hunger strike seeking swift and comprehensive rehabilitation of endosulfan victims in the district entered 31st day on Wednesday, a five-member delegation of agitating activists will hold preliminary talks with Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday ahead of the formal talks scheduled on Monday. A delegation led by Ambalathara Kunhikrishnan, convener of the Endosulfan Peedhitha Janakeeya Munnani, which has been spearheading the hunger strike, along with three women activists, would hold talks with Mr. Chandy in his office. A delegation comprising P. Karunakaran, MP, local MLAs, district panchayat president P.P. Shyamala Devi, senior officials and representatives of voluntary organisations would hold formal talks with Mr. Chandy on March 25 in a bid to end the stalemate following complaints of shortcomings in the relief package for victims. Activist K. Ajitha, who visited the strike venue on Wednesday, urged the authorities to accord top priority to solving the endosulfan victims’ problems. Meanwhile, environmentalist A. Mohan Kumar, who was hospitalised as his health condition got deteriorated after 16 days of hunger strike on Tuesday, was said to be continuing his strike in the hospital.
