Endosulfan victims call off protest

Thiruvananthapuram: Endosulfan victims have called off their indefinite strike in front of the official residence of the chief minister following talks their representatives had with a group of ministers led by chief minister Oommen Chandy. The government has promised to provide compensation to all deserving people and to include victims in all villages and municipalities in Kasaragod district in the scheme. The victims had pointed out that only 11 panchayats had been included under the compensation package and victims from other panchayats, neglected. As per the agreement, the government will pay the first instalment of compensation to those who are yet to receive it before February 18. The second instalment would be cleared before March 31. The meeting also decided to reject the recommendations of Justice C N Ramachandran Committee. Besides the chief minister, opposition leader V S Achuthanandan, ministers V S Sivakumar, M K Muneer and K P Mohanan took part in the discussions. The chief minister said the plantation corporation would sanction Rs 26 crore for the welfare of endosulfan victims at the next meeting of its director board. The corporation had already given Rs 27 crore for welfare activities. He said 2,834 endosulfan victims had been provided the first instalment of compensation recommended by the national human rights commission. The second instalment had been sanctioned and funds will be disbursed soon. However, Achuthanandan pointed out that there are 3,453 identified victims in Kasaragod who haven’t received a single rupee as compensation.
