The geology department of Vinoba Bhave University will host an Italian MNC-sponsored workshop on Tuesday to train young minds on energy efficiency with a thrust on helping them identify alternative sources of petroleum. As many as 100 students from 25 schools of Hazaribagh district will take part in the two-day workshop under the aegis of Ente Nazionalo Idrocarburi (Eni), an Italian oil and gas major. Head of department of VBU’s geology department Vipin Kumar and organising secretary of the workshop H.N. Sinha feared that future generations might need to rely on energy efficient use, seeing the exploitation of petroleum products. Sinha said apart from students, their parents and teachers were also expected on the first day of the workshop. He added that experts from University College of London including Bindra Thusu and Juergen Thurow, and Eni vice-president Jonathan Craig would talk on petroleum products, their exploitation and manufacturing. “They will tell students about the need to look for alternative sources. Students are our future and spreading information among them will definitely yield positive results,” he added. Jharkhand is rich in coal bed methane, which could be the best source alternative for petroleum, he said, adding that Eni selected Hazaribagh for the workshop after sponsoring similar events in three other varsities in India. A painting competition on global warming is also included on the first day of the workshop. Eni will reward the winners with books and T-shirts. On the second day, the experts will visit Dudhi River near Mandu in Ramgarh district. BCCL chairman-cum-managing director T.K. Lahiry will inaugurate the workshop.
