R. Kidwai and Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said on Tuesday that problems like bio-medical waste, waste water and air pollution should be properly addressed and relevant laws strictly enforced to keep Haryana environmentally clean and healthy. Presiding over a meeting of the State Environment Protection Council at Raj Bhavan here, Dr. Kidwai, who is also the Chairman of the Council, said problems arising out of the use of oxytocin on plants and animals should also be tackled on priority. He said the problem of recharging the ground water should be taken up seriously as the water table in southern Haryana had gone very low. For this purpose, large tanks and a big recharging web should be prepared at different places of the State, he added. Mr. Hooda said the subsidy to farmers on sprinkler and drip irrigation methods should be increased up to 90 per cent so that maximum use of these methods could be made. His Government, he added, had succeeded in supplying irrigation water even to parched areas of the State. Rain water harvesting It was decided that artificial rain water harvesting system would be adopted by all the existing government buildings, schools, colleges, universities and educational institutions in the State. Instructions were also issued to check unauthorised dyeing units which were growing rapidly on the outskirts of some cities. It was also decided that plastic carry-bags be used for carpeting and re-carpeting of roads after their conversion into petroleum products as was being done successfully in Bangalore and a small stretch of road should be carpeted using this technology on a pilot basis.
