THE Bombay High Court has asked the state government and its various departments to look into the issue of helipads on buildings and demarcation of religious places with regard to the noise pollution rules. The court was hearing a public interest litigation filed by NGO Awaaz Foundation alleging that the authorities had failed to control noise pollution in the city. Petitioner complained that no such zones have been identified in Mumbai so far. The rules came in the year 2000 but silence zones are yet to be created. Petitioner's lawyer Mallika Iyer stated that a distance of 100 meters should be demarcated as silence zones around religious places. Meanwhile, the state today submitted the minutes of the meeting of the committee which was constituted to demarcate silence zones and implement noise pollution rules. State counsel Shrihari Aney informed the court that they have a slight problem procuring decibel meters and informed that they have placed an order for 115 meters through the Mumbai police. Aney also stated that the MPCB will be giving 50 meters from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board. Aney also stated that they will be able to monitor only the level of noise in Mumbai during the elections. Petitioner also informed the court that no conditions regarding noise levels are imposed while granting permission for processions. The court has adjourned the case till April 30.
