Environment Day at Panjabari-Botahghuli

The Guwahati chapter of Society for Promotion of Tourism (SPOT) observed the World Environment Day on June 5 at Panjabari-Botahghuli area of the city with a day-long programme. The programme began with plantation of tree saplings in the premises of Botahghuli LP School. The plantation programme was inaugurated by Ajit Kumar Bora, president of SPOT Guwahati chapter by planting a sapling in presence of students, guests and public. The president of Amching gaon panchayat Kabita Dowerah also took part in the plantation along with other dignitaries of the locality. Significantly, the public of the locality came forward to receive saplings for massive plantation which was distributed by SPOT on the day. Art competition among the students was organised followed by a general meeting in the afternoon to highlight the significance of the day. Pranab Kumar Hazarika, chairman of SPOT explained the significance of the day keeping in view of the danger looming on human society due to global warning. With reference to the message of the year Kick the habit: towards low carbon economy, he stressed the need on the part of every citizen to be vigilant against deforestation and to work for a greener environment to arrest global warning for a healthy living. Dr Baikuntha Barman in his speech called upon the students in particular to make the habit of cleanliness in all aspects specially in drinking water. Prizes were distributed among the winners of art competition by the president, Pratiksha Hazarika, adviser SPOT, Sarmistha Bora, member and Sanyukta Bezbaruah. The programme came to the end with the president's speech wherein he called upon the gathering to work like responsible citizen of the society for conservation of environment.
