Smuggling of ozone depleting substances like chlorofluorocarbons (CFC 12) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFC 22) into India through to the notice of the authorities.Environmentalists have told the authorities that they have evidence to such smuggling and if timely action is not taken to curb smuggling, India would get a bad name since both production and consumption of ozone depleting substances are to be frozen at their 1995-97 levels from July 1, as per the Montreal prootcol mandate.
