KOCHI: With 11 municipalities and a municipal corporation, Ernakulam tops the list of the most urbanised districts in Kerala with 68.07 percent of its residents living in urban areas, according to Census 2011 findings. Of the total population of 32,79,860 in the coastal district, 22,32,564 live in urban areas, according to the Directorate of Census Operations, Kerala. The rural population in Ernakulam district is 10,47,296. While the total population of the district had gone up by a mere 5.60 per cent since 2001 (when the previous census was conducted), the urban population has witnessed a spurt of 51.15 per cent. The rural population has dipped by 35.70 per cent.
