One hundred and fifty European cities have pledged to replace their municipal fleets - ranging from garbage trucks to mayoral limousines - with zero or low emission vehicles, and to bring in legislation to allow only "green" vehicles into their historic centres. The cities hope the prospect of selling environmentally acceptable vehicles on a large scale will persuade manufacturers to develop such vehicles and reduce the price closer to conventionally powered vehicles.
