Excess fluoride in 1,063 blocks

Tests have so far detected the presence of excess fluoride and arsenic in 449 blocks in five districts and in 614 blocks in 18 districts of the State respectively. While samples of 33,000 water sources have so far been tested, tests on another 25,000 sources are on. Replying to a call attention motion by Mohibul Haq (Independent), State Public Health Engineering (PHE) Minister Rihan Daimary today said that under the Water Quality Monitoring and Surveillance Project, measures had been taken with Central Government funds and UNICEF expertise to test and monitor water quality besides training the common people for creating greater awareness. In addition, 102 piped water supply schemes and 1,117 ring well schemes have been started in all the blocks recording presence of fluoride and arsenic more than the permissible limit, the minister said, adding that plans were afoot to utilize rain water through rain water harvesting structures. Significantly, Daimary said that the PHE Department had not so far received information from the State Health Department about any case of people suffering from arsenic-related disorder. "We, have, however, received reports of fluorisis, and alternative sources of water have been arranged in all these areas,' he said. Daimary said that all the programmes were being carried out in accordance with Central Government guidelines, and there was no question of ignoring the UNICEF as alleged in certain quarters.
