- Exclusive ' pokkali' shrimp farming disappearing

The Kerala's exclusive organic 'pokkali' shrimp culture is slowly disappearing with the 'pokkali' shrimp farmers facing a cash crunch. This is not because of government promotion of aquaculture or the international dispute bestowed on Kerala prawns, inhibiting export of marine products. The 'pokkali' farmers say this has happened because of the untimely incursion of fresh water into the Periyar after the commissioning of the Lower Periyar and Edamalayar dams. This theory is, however, fallacious, say marine scientists.
