Expansion at cost of pine trees

  • 14/05/2001

Concrete structures are gradually devouring the lush green cover of hillocks near Anu, about 3 km from Hamirpur. Hundreds of full-grown pine trees have been chopped off for the construction of the campus of Regional Engineering College, Hamirpur, since it was established. Thousands more are likely to be axed as the government plans to give the college the status of a deemed university. The continuous deforestation of pine forest for the construction of college buildings for the past over 15 years, has endangered the ecological balance.
