Bhopal, July 24: The Madhya Pradesh State Forest Department will be experimenting on zoo-bred lions. In an ambitious project, the State's Forest department will be adopting few pair of zoo lions for the purpose of breeding. And when they will litter, the cubs will be imparted training to adopt in the natural conditions - to kill a prey and survive.
On being trained, these cubs will be introduced in the Palpur Kuno Wild Life Sanctuary located in the Sheopur district of the Madhya Pradesh.
It is worth mentioning that in the year 1992, Palpur Kuno Wild Life Sanctuary was selected as one of the most suitable site to shift lion who in India are found only in Gir National Park, Gujarat.
The plan was to shift some of the pairs of big cats, in order to 'save' them from the spread of sudden disease which could endanger their existence. Significantly, in India, lions in the wild are found only in Gir National Park.
Over population was one another reason to shift some pairs of lions. Thus to make Palpur Kuno a suitable place for the lion habitat, a Rs 640-crore central aided project was introduced in the year 1996-97. The plan was spread over a period of 20 years and in the last over ten-years the State Government has adequately prepared a second home for the big cats.
However, the State Government failed to get pairs of lion from Gujarat even after repeated request and series of meetings held between both the sides.
The Gujarat Government had turned down Madhya Pradesh's proposal by saying that Gujarat will never spare it's pride.
"Now, to introduce big cats in Palpur Kuno, State Government is waiting for the Central clearance to launch the project", said a senior Indian Forest Officer.
Once the project gets a go ahead, few pair of lions will be adopted to breed. And after the cubs are born, they will be handed over to a trained professional who will take them back to their natural instinct, he added.
"Such kind of project requires huge amount. We are waiting and depending for the Central approval of project", he added.
