Following the allegation that the Karivannur drinking water project is unnecessary and not feasible when there is sufficient water in Peechi reservoir, the Corporation has decided to appoint an expert committee to review the project. According to Mayor Rajan Pallan, a committee with expert members from water authority will study the feasibility of the Karivannur drinking water project envisaged to distribute water in areas, including Thrissur City. The committee will also study the problems regarding the drinking water distribution under the city corporation. There are allegations that the project is a waste of money as the authorities are not able to properly use the water from existing Peechi project. The water authority had planned the first phase of the project at a cost of Rs. 94 crore for setting up pump house and water treatment plant at Palakkadavu on the Karivannur River. The corporation council had approved the project and had decided to give 25 cents of land to build a water tank for the water authority at Kuriachira. The government had given administrative sanction for the work at a cost of Rs. 28 core. Apart from Thrissur City, Adatt, Manalur, Arimbur, Kolazhy, Mulangunnathukavu, Avanur, Venkidangu and Madakkathara panchayats are the beneficiaries of the project. In addition to the Rs. 94 crore first phase, another Rs. 100 crore will be needed to set up distribution network. There are allegations that the proposed project is a waste of money as the corporation authorities are not able to properly use the water from existing Peechi project.
