A nine-member expert team headed by Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF-Wildlife) MC Malakar has started an on-the-spot visit to the Kaziranga National Park (KNP), Pabitora and Orang from today. The expert team visited Pabitora this morning and the KNP in the afternoon. It will visit Orang tomorrow. The committee has been formed by Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain at a meeting yesterday as the killing of rhinos continued unabated in the State. It may be mentioned here that the State Government has taken some steps to stop killing of rhinos by poachers, but killing of the animal still continues in the State. In February last, the horn was taken out from a rhino that was alive, and that created a ruckus in the State with a number of organizations, including the All Assam Students' Union, taking to the streets. After that, as many as two rhinos were killed in the KNP and three in Orang. The expert team will identify the lacunae, if any, in the steps taken by the Government to stop the killing of rhinos. According to official sources, the State Forest Department has sent a proposal to the Government to form a special armed force for protection of wildlife in the State as the task of wildlife protection cannot be entrusted to the police that lacks manpower. According to sources, in accordance with the Arms Act, forest guards cannot be provided with .303 rifles, and as such armed home guards have been deployed in the KNP and Orang. But the home guards too have their limitation. According to sources, SPs of the districts surrounding the KNP, Orang and Pabotora have also been asked to intensify their vigil in the reserve forests adjacent to the national parks.
