Kochi: Cities across the world should share adaption strategies formulated to counter climate change, experts attending a two-day workshop on AsianCities Adapt-Impact of Climate Change in Target Cities 4 in India and the Philippines, said here on Wednesday. While interacting with the delegates, experts from Dymphna N Javier, University of Philippines, said there was no single solution to address climate change, and cities should share strategies and learn from each other. They suggested newer strategies to counter heat indicators. They mooted the introduction of more green concepts, ecofriendly material and sustainable solutions to reduce particulate pollution, also which cause severe health issues. Presenting a study, Prof S K Dash of IIT-Delhi’s Centre of Atmospheric Sciences, said the temperature in Kochi could go up by one per cent during the coming years. He, however, ruled out the possibility of extreme temperature. Besides Kochi, the study also covered Madurai, Visakhapatnam and Howrah. The study was conducted as part of the AsianCities Adapt project. Madurai could also get warmer, but there was no projection of increase or decrease of temperature in Howrah and Vishakhapatnam, Prof Dash said. He also warned of more single-day heavy rainfall during the monsoon in the state, which usually gets days of showers at a stretch. “We know of disasters caused by irregular or sudden rains,” he said. Representatives from 20 south Asian cities attended the workshop hosted by the Kochi Corporation. The Adapt project was being coordinated by Germanybased International climate initiative (ICLEI) local governments for sustainability and Potsdam institute for climate impact research (PIK), Germany and IIT-D.
