The famous wells of Savanur in Haveri district, Karnataka are slowly disappearing. Savanur, once ruled by the Nawabs, boasts of many landmarks including wells built more than a century ago. There are four important wells worth mentioning in Savanur-- Vishnuteertha bavi, Ramateertha bavi, Sadhyamritha bavi and Mahabooba Alikhan giranibavi. Besides serving as storage points, these wells have beautiful carvings and steps. Apart from the Sadhyamritha bavi, all the others are in a dilapidated state. Water in these wells has dried up due to a fall in the ground water table and due to negligence on the part of the people. Miscreants continue to steal rocks used to build these wells. Most of these wells have become places for anti-social activities.
