Khammam, Aug. 24: The farmers of the Nagarjunasagar project left canal second zone ayacut wanted the government to announce the date of releasing water to their zone. The government started releasing water to the first zone on August 13 but did not announce the details of the second zone water release. The farm operations started under the ayacut area of various minor and medium irrigation projects inclu-ding Bayyaram tank, Peda-vagu, Taliperu, Wyra, Palair and Kinnerasani. The farmers started paddy plantation even under the local tanks due to incessant rains in the first week of August. But, the lands in the second zone are parched. A total of 3.5 lakh acres would be irrigated in the second zone which is supplied water in the third week of August every year. But, the Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar reservoirs did not receive sufficient inflows because of delayed monsoon. Water level at the Srirsailam reservoir at present is 883.4 feet against 885 full reservoir level and Nagarjunasagar is at 562 feet level of the 590 feet FRL. A total of 82 tmc feet of deficit has been registered at Nagarjunasagar against the FRL. The inflows to the reservoir are to an extent of only 66,000 cusecs and water released at Srisailam goes to the Nagarjunasagar. According to the NSP office, the officials sent a report on the need to release water to the second zone. Fortunately, the water level in Palair reservoir reached 24 feet FRL and it can be released for three to four days from the reservoir before it receives water from the upstream canal. About 4,000 to 5,000 cusecs of water is stagnant in the main canal and its branch canals due to rains and release of flood water from Palair reservoir. As a result, the water would reach the fields as soon it is released to the second zone. But, the government should take a decision on the date of release to the zone. Farmer leader M. Tirumala Rao said, "The farmers plan to raise paddy nurseries by getting seeds and other inputs."
