Western UP is witnessing a widespread farmers' resentment over non-remunerative prices for their sugarcane. The entire belt of western Uttar Pradesh is simmering with anger as the farmers are alleging that the prices of sugarcane have been fixed by the Government at the behest of the powerful sugarmill owners lobby. Farmers blocked trains and public vehicles on all national highways including NH-24 leading to Lucknow, NH-58 leading to Dehradun, GT road leading to Kanpur and the Delhi Saharanpur road. The agitators staged dharna on the railway tracks leading to Ambala, Dehradun and Lucknow. Road and rail traffic was adversely affected in the districts under Meerut and Saharanpur divisions. In Ghaziabad Rashtriya Lok Dal workers staged a dharna for two hours at New Ghaziabad railway station and burnt the effigy of Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Panwar. During this period the district administration ordered stopping all trains at Ghaziabad junction prior to the station. At Hapur agitators stopped the Khurja-Meerut passenger train for four hours. Simbhaoli, Garh, Kutchesar Chopla and Hapur witnessed a complete traffic jam. The road route to Dehradun via National Highway 58 and Chaudhary Charan Singh Kanwar Marg remained completely jammed for the entire day. A train was also stopped at Kazampur in Modi Nagar and rail traffic was paralysed for the entire day. Fishplates of the track at Garh Mukteswar were also removed. The agitators only allowed trains to move in the evening after the intervention of the district administration.
