Iraq has arrested the scientist widely considered the father of Baghdad's germ weapons programme as he was preparing to flee the country. His arrest "deals a significant blow to the UN inspectors who have spent much of the last seven years trying to determine the scale and killing power of Iraq's germ arsenal", says western officials.
