Faulty conservation leaves Pushkar lake with less water

Hundreds of tourists who are attracted to a greener Pushkar this monsoon, are disheartened to see the lake not filled to its full capacity. The lake is unable to retain the water because of technical fault in the national lake conservation programme. Last year, the water level went to 16 feet in monsoon. After the first rains in July, the water level went over 8 feet but soon receded. Rains in last 48 hours brought the level back to 7.9 feet. The capacity of Pushkar Lake is 27 feet and people here were happy that the conservation programme will bring stable level of water in the lake. “The slit was dug and water feeders were constructed from Kherkheri and Savitri hills, bringing water of rains to the lake and about Rs 41 crore were spent. However, a technical error has led to water at the bottom of the lake being swept out,” said a source. Of the Rs 41 crore, Rs 33.33 crore were funded by the centre while the rest was the state government’s share. Locals claim that there is leakage in the bottom of the lake which discharged the water to the different underground water channels “When the lake went to sixteen feet, the water level reduced to 12 in last Decemberjust after four months, again this time water is not retained in the lake” said local Purohits. Meanwhile, foreign tourists have already started arriving while international tourists agencies have started making inquiries for the forthcoming tourist season.
