When officials of the forest department recently raided Karanja village, near Kasa, to confiscate illegally felled wood, they were pelted with stones. They opened fire for cover, but ended up injuring a villager in the process. Such clashes have become the norm in Thane district, where smuggling of wood from the forests is rampant.
