KHAMMAM: Mobs held sway over this town on Friday as they repeatedly raided numerous fertilizer outlets with the police, unable to control the situation, watching helplessly.
Thousands of tribals, many of them farmers, stormed the town, smashed the shutters of fertilizer outlets and went on a looting spree in private godowns, including those run by distributors of Coromandel. Sporadic raids continued till late in the evening and even the godowns of the District Cooperative Marketing Society were not spared.
Khamamm sub divisional police officer Rameshaiah and five other policemen were injured when farmers pelted stones. Two farmers were also hurt, one of them seriously. Small contingents of police, which arrived at the godowns, were outnumbered and pushed out. As situation began spiralling out of control, more forces were rushed and senior police officials, including SP M. M. Bhagwat, plunged into action to control the mobs.
Farmers on the sidelines cheered when others won first round of confrontation with the police by looting a large number of fertilizer bags and pesticide cans. They took away the entire stock from the MGRC godown of Coromandel company, but left behind some bags in the second godown.
A brisk walk from the scene of looting was enough for the farmers to take away their booty.
All they had to do was to throw away their footwear to facilitate an easy exit. As a result, the entire street was littered with footwear. Some farmers were seen piling up their booty on the railway line nearby and running back to the godowns hoping to loot some more.
Farmers were selective too, with a majority of them carrying on their shoulders choicest of brands such as 28:28 or 20:20. A farmer even sneaked in for the second time convincing the police cordon that he had lost a mobile phone. The police were soon in for a shock to find him coming out with yet another bag on his shoulder. However, he dumped it in the godown itself after realising it was not the variety he was looking for.
Loss not ascertained
District Collector Shashi Bhushan told reporters later that the looters were anti-social elements and not farmers. He said as many as 1,300 bags of fertilizer were taken away from five godowns and the financial loss was yet to be ascertained.
