Fighting to revive Yamuna

On the day of World Environmental Day, June 5, we started our maiden trip on a motorcycle. The plan was to ride along the banks of river Yamuna, meeting people settled downstream, understand the river and connect with the people. At the same time, to look at the possibility of a campaign for Yamuna. We were a group of 20, 15 riding on bikes and five travelling with the support material. We would ride 70-80 km everyday and stayed in any village that came on our way. We were interacting with people, collecting the history of the river. It was surprising for us to see that, though the river is heavily polluted, the local people respect it a lot. And it was a sad experience to see how the white river that enters Delhi turns into black filth once it leaves the city. The people living on the banks of the river want it to be cleaned, and it gave us hope that we can do something. Another surprise for us was that all the villages we visited, we were welcomed so warmly, just like family. Away from the crowds of Delhi, where no one finds time even to greet their loved ones, we were thrilled with the welcome we got from total strangers. They not only offered shelter and food, they gave us love and respect. Riding through the kachcha roads and sand, although a little tough, was an amazing experience. The happiest moments for us were when we saw an abundance of aquatic life in the river. It increased our hope that the river can be revived.
