CUTTACK: Expect a cleaner Millennium City, shorn of the filthy stinking garbage dumps, this Durga Puja. For, with increasing flak over its failure in solid waste management coupled with strict vigil of the Orissa High Court, the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) has finally gone ahead with complete privatisation of the garbage disposal process.
The Orissa Small Industries Corporation (OSIC) has been entrusted with the responsibility of transportation of garbage from the designated collection points across the city to the dumping yard at Chakradharpur under Barang block.
The State PSU has already got on the job from October 1, ferrying tractor loads of garbage to the yard about 35 kms from here. As many as 50 tractors are making the trips initially and the number set to go up to 100 in the next few days. At least 100 vehicles are needed to clean up the city every day which generates solid waste to the tune of more than 150 tonne daily.
According to CMC Health Officer Dr Niranjan Das, the objective has been to streamline the collection, transportation and disposal system and install an effective solid-waste management mechanism. The sweepers
